FAQ and error resolution

How do I record my own mixes from Soundman?

Record your mix professionally is easy with Soundman Recording Wizard or Soundman Recording Tools.

You need a sound editor, for example Goldwave  - www.goldwave.com. There is not a recording software included in Soundman, because to do it properly you need the real thing (like Goldwave or Cool Edit). Don’t bother with integrated tin pan editors like some other mixers have.

This is how you record a mix using the Recording Wizard.

1. Start the recording wizard and follow step by step instructions.

Once you are done you have a recorded mix in a soundfile, a cuesheet and a tracklisting that match each other. See “To Burn” section below for how to burn your mixes.

This is how you record a mix using a sound editor using the tools you find under “Recoding Tools” menu in Soundman.

1. Start recording in a sound editor.

* The output from Soundman will be recorded to a file.

2. Start cue sheet

* In Soundman click Recording Tools -> Write Start Mix Timer and Cue Sheet

(You will hear a voice counting "Three, two, one, beep!" This will be used later to sync cue sheet with recording).

3. Play and mix...

* … until you are done.

4. Trim sound file

* Go back to the sound editor and stop the recording

* Cut out the beginning of the sound file (the "Beep!" and everything before it) and save it.

After the above 4 steps you have a recorded mix in a soundfile, a cuesheet and a tracklisting that match each other. Chose Recording Tools -> Open Cue Sheet and Track Listing if you want to look at them.

To burn:

You can now open the soundfile in your CD burner, import the cue sheet and burn. It will give you a CD with tracks splitted, and the CD burner will also create track listing from the cue sheet too.

To split into tracks:

If your CD burner can not handle cue sheets or you want to distribute your mix as separate MP3 files you will want to split the file into separate tunes.  This can be done by any sound editor that handles cue sheets. In Goldwave for example, chose Cue -> import cue sheet -> split file.

I can’t install, it says some files are corrupt. Why?

This sometimes happens to users who got a slow link. Contact us and we’ll send you the install software by e-mail. It’s 5 mb so make sure your mailbox can handle that.

Does Soundman spy?

No. Just about all freeware you download these days, including MP3 mixers, picks up personal information from your system and sends it on to databases. It can be the sites you visit, the soundfiles you have, the software you got installed etc. SOUNDMAN does not do this!

Is Soundman really free?

Sure. No strings attached, no adds, no spying.

What system files may be replaced?

Se below

How do I use headphones?

Full instruction on how to use headphones is in the usage guide, available once you have installed.

How did you guys get this thing together? What program language is it?

Soundman is built in Visual Basic. It relies on three things, Windows Media Player 9, some common system files (OCX:s) and the Visual Basic runtime environment.

General error resolution

The most common problem is that Windows Media Player is not installed or that it is a version earlier then 9. Install WMP9 before doing further error resolution.

Unlike many other software producers we have been very restrictive about replacing system files in the install procedure. This means it's safer to install SOUNDMAN then most other softwares, but it also means some necessary system files may be missing after the install is completed. The following steps will resolve problems related to this and most other problems that may occur:

1. If you answered "no" to questions if to replace files during installation, rerun the installation and this time answer "yes".

2. Download this system update from Microsoft and double click on it. It will update the Visual Basic runtime environment

3. Reinstall Windows Media Player from Microsoft site. This is a good idea regardless, MS is intensively developing the WMP and it's a very good media player. If the WMP install hangs you need to manually delete the ocx "msdxm.ocx", and then rerun the WMP installation. (The WMP installation will replace the msdxm.ocx with a new one).

4. Run the Soundman install again.

These steps should resolve most problems. If it doesn't, contact us. Just remeber to tell us what OS and HW you are running.

EXACTLY WHAT FILES MAY BE REPLACED?

You may be wondering exactly what happens when you install, and again, unlike other software producers I will tell you:

1. If you answer "no" to questions during the installation no system files will be replaced.

2. The following files will be replaced if you already have them and you answer "yes" during the install procedure and the file in question is outdated:

COMDLG32.OCX

MSCOMCTL.OCX

MSWINSCK.OCX

Msinet.ocx

GraficButton.ocx

vbalNCSM6.dll

SSubTmr6.dll

3. If you download and install the Microsoft VB update he following files will be replaced:

stdole2.tlb

msvbvm60.dll

oleaut32.dll

olepro32.dll

asycfilt.dll

comcat.dll

4. If you reinstall WMP a lot of files will probably be replaced, but MS won't tell us which. However, as with the VB runtime update, this is safe to do, thousands of users do it daily.
